Berlin is a laboratory where the physical urban territory and the territory of the film have been interconnected during the last 100 years. Runscape Berlin aims to open this unique laboratory to unfold a new reading of the city through the eyes of the cinema.
Running is a current theme of Berlin cinema, from M to Run Lola Run - running for your life through the courtyard of an apartment building (schloss), the innocence of running-rolling with a group of friends in the shopping arcades or running in the ruins of the abandoned East Berlin amusement Spreepark. Berlin cinema presents a catalogue of possible spaces - many of them disused or filled with edifices that have been erased from the map. Starting from a montage of various cut from film, we will build a new route to guide the steps of a new runner.
Why running in Berlin? Runscape Berlin propose to break through historical lines and building blocs, to bypass new political borders and barricades, to be naked in the ruins of the gigantic worksite of the city. Running activates a new form of intensity in a city lacking of density. In Berlin, the urban substance opens on undefined fields where new personal histories can be written.
